چکیده

Empathy and prosocial behavior constitute aspects of child-context relations. They are influenced by the environment of the developing child, and they influence the child's relation to his or her environment. The child's most intimate environment are the caretakers, whereas on a rnacrolevel the cultural environment and the sociopolitical system are operating. These environments are interconnected and affect the child-context relation, and thereby the child's development. This chapter is based on a larger study that entails investigations at several levels of complexity in person-context relations. The focus is on the macrocontextual influences that cultural environments may have on empathy and prosocial action in social interactions. In specific, within a frame of macrocultural comparisons, behavioral observations and self-reports are used for microanalyses of contextual influences on children's empathy and prosocial actions. Assume here that the child's prosocial action-an altruistic motivated person-context relation-occurs on the basis of certain emotions, especially on the basis of empathic feelings with other people. Traditionally, the understanding of the determinants of prosocial behavior is based on studies that have focused almost exclusively on adults. Consequently, cognitive aspects have been the center of attention, and little effort has been paid to examining emotional aspects. However, for young children, it appears questionable whether the study of empathy can rely solely on a cognitive framework. Thus, there are doubts as to whether the specific emotional qualities

Cognitive and social influences on early prosocial behavior in two sociocultural contexts.

In this cross-cultural study, we tested 2 main hypotheses: first, that an early self-concept along with self-other differentiation is a universal precursor of prosocial behavior in 19-month-olds, and second, that the importance attached to relational socialization goals (SGs) concerning interpersonal responsiveness (obedience, prosocial behavior) is related to toddlers' prosocial behavior. Cont...

The Need for Semantical Understanding of Prosocial Behavior in the Workplace

Within the domain of prosocial behavior, the most intense debate centers on the degree to which behavior is the result of an altruistic personality in combination with situational, cultural, gender, and contextual factors. In the recent years, attempts to narrow the parameters of this discussion have focused on subsets of prosocial behavior such as: altruism versus self-interest, helping behavi...

In general, sympathy fosters prosocial behavior and distress inhibits it (Eisenberg et al., 1989). All these studies were carried out in Western countries. A meta-analysis ...

Bischof - Köhler ' s Universalist Perspective Comment : Culture - Specific Developmental Pathways to Prosocial Behavior

In her work, Doris Bischof-Köhler describes how empathically motivated prosocial behavior emerges during the second year of life. From a cross-cultural perspective we argue that this developmental pathway is prototypical for autonomy-oriented sociocultural contexts. BischofKöhler’s theory should be complemented by a theory of situational helping behavior based on shared intentional relations to...
